Every year Coral Gables Senior High holds an annual talent show called CavCrash, where students have the opportunity to show off their skills and compete for a winning title. CavCrash’s sole purpose is to give the students a voice for any unique talent they possess, whether it be singing, dancing, or even a group effort.
Aside from the other changes happening this year, one of them includes the cancelling of the school’s annual talent show. The decision to cancel CavCrash was based on the lack of participants auditioning to perform in the show, which forced the pep rally coordinator, Ms. Mo Marmesh, and the school’s activities director, Ms. Suarez, to make the decision to cancel the talent show altogether.
“I cancelled it because there were only six acts that turned in the application for the performance portion, and that’s not enough to put on a show,” responded Ms. Marmesh, when asked about her thoughts on having to cancel the show.
Before CavCrash, the school originally put on a barbecue fundraiser at Gables, where stands that sold food to the students were set up after school. Due to a lack of attendance from students who were not able to stay after school, teachers and faculty brainstormed to create a new idea for a fundraiser, and thus CavCrash was born.
Throughout the years, Cavcrash has undergone many changes. Initially starting out as a homecoming pep rally, as the years went by, CavCrash became more of a talent show that included skits and performance rather then a pep rally for games. This year’s talent show would have consisted of the usual student performances as well as the traditional class skits that show off the Gables spirit.
A near 10 year old tradition here at Gables, CavCrash is known as one of the most anticipated events of the school year; right along with Mr. Coral Gables, Fall Frolics, and the Gablette Revue. The last minute decision to cancel the show just days before it was anticipated to take place has left students displeased and unsatisfied.
Senior Bryan Medina, who was supposed to have a spot in the talent show, shared his thoughts on the show being cancelled, stating, “Now that the show is cancelled it’s going to be even harder to get my band out there.”
Last year’s CavCrash had over a dozen performances that ranged from blind drummers to an imitation of Michael Jackson’s legendary moon walk. The sudden drop in numbers made students like senior Nataniah Trujillo believe that the spirit in Gables is dwindling off. She stated, “It’s unfortunate that CavCrash has been cancelled. It was always such a huge event. Its cancellation is just one more reminder of how little school spirit still exists.”
This year the school has made various attempts to raise the school spirit amongst the students and the community, including planned pep-rallies before football games to raise game attendance as well as advertising the football games. However, due to a lack of student participation, events such as Homecoming and CavCrash run the risk of being cancelled.
“Unless people actually decide to participate, the fun stuff starts to disappear,” stated Ms. Marmesh on her thoughts about the lack of participation in school events.
This year’s homecoming nominations announcement was supposed to take place at CavCrash, but was instead announced in the school’s first ever rodeo pep-rally, which took place on October 23, 2013 during 8th period.
As for the announcements regarding the homecoming court, the winning princesses and princes was announced for all grade levels as well as the top 3 nominations for king and queen. The final announcement for king and queen will take place the night of homecoming on October 24, 2013 at 10 o’clock.
