Along with enthusiasm, intelligence, and a great sense of humor, CGHS tennis coach David Weiner led the Coral Gables boys’ tennis team through an amazing season and on to win the state championship title for the first time in 42 years. Carrying the team to work significantly hard and to accomplish the unimaginable, everyone grew rather fond of Weiner’s impressive coaching skills.

On May 21, 2014, the All-Dade athletic awards took place at Jungle Island. While several boys were recognized on their stellar playing, Weiner was awarded Boys’ Coach of the Year for Tennis for the second time in the past three years.

Throughout the entire 2014 Spring tennis season, Weiner was fully dedicated to winning the state championship. He had his players prepared and driven not only to play, but also to win every single match. In tough matches and important situations, Weiner thoroughly coached his players and pushed them to fight until the end. The boys’ team ended up with a regular season winning record, District Champions, Regional Champions, and State Champions.

“Weiner is the man; I wouldn’t want to have any other coach,” former CGHS tennis player Ricardo Mercado said.

Weiner is also the CGHS girls’ tennis team coach and applied the same concept to allow them to reach Regional Semi-finals. He always pushed for the best and kept the team well-practiced and ready to take on the impossible.

“Our coach always provided us with Gatorade, water, snacks, and countless cans of tennis balls for the matches. He taught us how to stay together and work as a team; that’s exactly how we got the job done,” senior Caroline Bauwens said.

This CGHS coach put forth maximum effort to support and care for the tennis players. He proved to have faith in everyone and truly deserved to win yet again the All-Dade Boys’ Coach of the Year for Tennis.
