Dancing Through Life: Katherine Elwell

Katherine Elwell

Katherine Elwell practices dance about 27 hours a week.

At age 12, Katherine Elwell discovered her hobby: dance. She practices dance regularly and yet, somehow manages the workload of a junior in the International Baccalaureate program. Elwell’s balancing act facilitates her involvement in extracurricular activities and still allows time for her true passion, which is dance.

Q: How long have you been dancing for?

A: Since the seventh grade; I started pretty late.

Q: When and why did you start?

A: I started because my friend was starting, and I just tagged along to see if it would be fun and I ended up really liking it.

Q: What types of dance do you practice or have practiced?

A: I do mostly Ballet. We do Modern and Contemporary also but I’m not very good at it but, I like Ballet mostly.

Q: Why do you think dance is such a big part of your life?

A:  I think if you do anything a lot it becomes a big part of your life and I really enjoy it. It’s kind of like a stress reliever, so I really like it.

Q: Do you plan on practicing dance in the future?

A: Yeah, I think for college I want to be a double major of dance and primary education and go on into dance education.

Q: When you’re not dancing, what are you doing?

A: I like to read a lot and most of the time just homework because I’m pretty busy when I’m not dancing. There’s not a lot of time.

Q: In the future do you want to dabble in other forms of dance?

A: Yeah, I think it’d be really cool to work more with modern and stuff because it’s a really interesting form of dance I think. I don’t do it as much as I’d like to.

In addition to her regular dance hours, she also teaches a group of younger dance students. Elwell has already auditioned for many colleges and hopes to have a future teaching dance to younger children. She has put in a lot of dedication and time to her one and only passion, dance!
