SECME Places at District Competition

Feb 16, 2016

Gables’s SECME club attended the “Full STEaM Ahead” competition last week on Feb. 6 at the Miami Dade College North Campus. The team is proud to say that they finally were able to place in the competition this year, and also that their club membership has increased by 50 percent. The SECME club placed third in the mousetrap car competition, third in the water rocket competition and second in the generator contest. Sadly, they were unable to place in the essay competition or in the banner contest.

Students can join this club to learn and test engineering principles. SECME encourages students to enroll in challenging courses and to pursue degrees in engineering, mathematics and the sciences. The sponsor, Mrs. Phillips, helped lead this team into greatness.

“SECME has opened my eyes on how amazing and fun the science and engineering world is. It is also a great opportunity the school offers for a little insight of the science world. I have absolutely adored the club,” freshman Dominique Babin said.

SECME has so much more to offer than just being a club – it’s a way you can learn and experience new things.

“SECME is not only a club that allows you to widen your experiences, but also educate yourself with projects that you’ve never done before. After all, every experience counts,” sophomore Gayathri Samuel said.

Both the sponsor and the members are excited for next year and have have already started planning. So, if you like being in an exciting and challenging atmosphere or if you like math, science and engineering, you should definitely give this club a try. If you are even interested in running for office next year, see Mrs. Phillips in room 2108.
