Coming from a completely different part of the world is tough, but junior Jane Masangu knows exactly what it feels like to live in a foreign country. Masangu moved from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country located in central Africa, and is attending Gables to finish her education in English. Adjusting to new surroundings, culture and people can be difficult, but Masangu is determined to make the most of her time here in Miami!

Masangu is fluent in several languages: French, English, Swahili and Lingala, a local language spoken in the Congo. Masangu is currently learning Spanish to better fit into the Miami culture.

Everyone knows the awful humidity iconic to Florida, and Masangu did not take much time to notice it. Back in the Congo, the climate was far more pleasant in comparison to the 90-degree Miami heat.

“I like it here because in the Congo we didn’t have fast food or shopping centers … so I’m really glad to be here, and I know that a lot of people would like to be in my position right now … I’m just trying to get used to [Miami],” Masangu said.

Back home, Masangu used to visit several villages across the Congo. In fact, her mother built a small school in a rural town close to Masangu’s home to help educate the underprivileged children living there.

“I used to go there with my mom when I was young – about 6 years old – and I made a lot of friends that didn’t go to school until they were 10 years old. I’m still friends with them today,” Masangu said.

Masangu is still getting into the groove of Gables and hoping to find her niche, especially with all the clubs and sports there are to offer. Some of her hobbies include dancing and listening to music; she wishes to expand her horizons and discover new interests and hobbies here at Gables.

With her worldly background and positive attitude, Jane Masangu is definitely one special Cavalier!
