There is a constant buzz about this year’s presidential candidates. Everyone feels compelled to share their two cents. Nikita Leus-Oliva is a sophomore who felt she should take her ideas one step further and not just talk about this year’s election; she volunteers as a fellow for the Hillary Clinton campaign, focused on the Coral Way and Shenendoah area, aiming to register new voters and ensure they are informed.

Working for the Clinton campaign began simply when Leus-Oliva signed up on the Hillary Clinton app. Shortly thereafter, she received the call that started it all: her local organization encouraged her to fill out an application and officially become a fellow.

As a fellow, Nikita’s responsibilities include attending several different events promoting Clinton such as voter registration and canvassing. Being a fellow is not all work–the fellows also attend debate watch parties and recruit new volunteers with phone banks. Recently, Nikita has become more involved with the campaign and has taken on the responsibility to organize and host her own events where she trains other volunteers and represents her organizer at meetings.

“The most inspirational thing about this campaign is the people that take part. My organizer has been a true inspiration to me, personally. It is incredibly empowering to be the one enabling someone to vote and ensuring that those who can’t vote are still involved in any way possible,” Leus-Oliva said.

Leus-Oliva has come to love her job on Clinton’s campaign. It allows her the opportunity to promote not only voting in America, but guarantee the involvement of those like her, who are unable to take part in the election through a vote. She also is passionate about what she feels is right for the future of the country she will continue to live in through the active advocation of her political views.

“It’s important to support this campaign because there’s a lot at stake in this election and as a minor who can’t vote, I feel compelled to do what I can in order to ensure a democratic victory,” Leus-Oliva said.

Politics has always been a topic of interest for Leus-Oliva. Through her work on this campaign, she has realized the passion she has for it. After this election, she hopes to stem further into the world of politics, and hopes to continue promoting Clinton if she runs for a second term. In the meantime, there are an abundance of opportunities Leus-Oliva cannot wait to take part in.
