The day the Storm Watch pep rally took place, you could spot students and teachers wearing black clothing, spirit items, and rain gear to show their support for the upcoming football game against South Dade.
As the students walked into the auditorium, they were welcomed with music and a projector screen with #CavsConnect written in bright red colors, so as to promote the site’s contest regarding the game. During the pep rally, students had the opportunity to post pictures of the event up on social media sites like Twitter, and were encouraged to include the mentioned hashtag in their posts to be eligible for the contest and possibly win a lunch from Chipotle delivered to their classrooms.
The pep rally provided the much needed support for the football team as they prepared for Saturday’s game, and gave students and faculty a chance to show how much they support both their school and their team.
The pep rally also included performances from dance groups, such as the Gablettes, as well as the cheerleaders and S.W.A. in order to pump up the crowd during the event. Adding on to the performances was a video done by Javier Cobas, who has made the previous videos for the pep rallies, that left the crowd in awe. The video was based on the pep rally’s theme, and showcased the hard work and dedication the football team has gone through in order to be where they stand today.
“The video was just breathtaking. I loved the editing the video had, and the song “Sail” by Awolnation perfectly matched with all the football players tackling and making touchdowns, as shown today. Like the other videos, they’re just so stunning and makes the crowd go wild with every little scene,” said junior Zak Wagan.
Following the video, Coach Pollard appeared in a yellow rain coat, supporting the theme of the pep rally. He came out with a heartwarming speech to the crowd about their hard work and dedication this season, and he told everyone to come out to the game that will take place on November 30, 2013 at 1:00 PM in Traz Powell Stadium against their next rivals South Dade.
“I’ve been to all the pep rallies and I won’t stop now, but so far this pep rally is one of my favorites. It was extremely pumped up, loud, and filled with surprises, like the Mr. Cheerleader popping out of nowhere on stage. Also, all the new songs and routines get better each performance,” said freshman Lucy Walsh.
Along with the performances and the football storm watch video came a second video that consisted of a teaser to the upcoming Mr. Coral Gables pageant. Contestants of this year’s pageant were also brought on stage, where they presented themselves, for the clubs and activities they represented, to the audience that afternoon. As this happened, one could hear from a mile a way the the flood of girls who cheered on the Mr. Coral Gables contestants.
To wrap up the pep rally, students and teachers raised their right arms into the air and sang along together to the school’s Alma Matter. Next came something no one expected: confetti blown from canons hit the audience and displayed a colorful spectacle that excited the crowd.
“It was so unfortunate I couldn’t go since it was one of the biggest pep rallies of the school year. Although, I hope South Dade is ready to face the biggest storm of the year,” senior Luis Herrera said.
With a 11-1 season, something that hasn’t happened in Gables history in over 40 years, the Cavalier Nation has shown their strength and dedication for their school and are sure to bring the storm during the next football game against South Dade.
