SECME Competition
Feb 18, 2015
On Saturday, Feb. 7, SECME had its 20th annual SECME Competition at the Miami-Dade College North Campus. SECME is the club for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) that partakes in competitions year-round.
“Science is an important element in our students’ everyday lives. It is great that we got an award this year,” Physics teacher Ms. Martin said.
Throughout the first and second nine weeks, students in Physics classes and the SECME club worked diligently to invent their multiple experiments. The students made bridges, egg drop containers and water-bottle rockets. This year, one of the students, senior Ralph Rivero, submitted his science fair essay on Nano Suits, and won a third place prize. Last year, Gables didn’t win any awards; but in 2012, they took home a second place award for a mousetrap car, and did the same again this year.
“The most enjoyable part of the bridge building is definitely seeing the final product and realizing how something so tiny could be so strong,” sophomore Maria Ordonez said.
We congratulate Rivero for his success on his science fair essay. Gables has high hopes for bringing home more awards in future years.
