Class of 2018: A Week of Senior Spirit

As the halfway point of the school year has passed, senioritis is rapidly spreading throughout the senior class. Luckily, Spirit Week arrived just in time to give the seniors’ quickly waning energy levels a much-needed boost. The week, spanning from Feb. 5 to Feb. 9, included a different theme for seniors each day to change-up their daily school routine. Senior Spirit Week has been a great opportunity for the seniors to have some fun in their final months of high school. The week went as follows:

Monday, Feb. 5 – Tacky Tourist Day:

The usual, mundane start of the week was interrupted by brightly colored shirts and dark sunglasses. Many seniors started the week off in style, sporting beach apparel and clothing with too many palm tree images. Being able to view tourists in their native environment provided seniors with plenty of inspiration to draw upon and left little to the imagination. Wearing their best cringe-worthy attire, the seniors strutted around campus, eager to enjoy a rare opportunity to get around the normal dress code.

Tuesday, Feb. 6 – Decades Day:

The school enjoyed a blast from the past on Tuesday as seniors wore various attires typical of many past moments in history. Tie-dyed clothing was the most common choice as many of the students chose to represent the hippie generation of the 1960s. However, they faced strong opposition from the polka-dotted skirts and leather jackets as others displayed the sock-hop style of the 1950s. The distinctive fashion of each decade of the past half-century was represented throughout the hallways before the school day came to an end, and many were eager to see what seniors would wear the next day.

“Decades Day was my personal favorite as I just loved seeing the different cultures of the past and how they differed from our own, current culture,” senior Camilo Catsus said.

Wednesday, Feb. 7 – Dress Like a Teacher Day:

Impressing with your attire on Wednesday took a little more thought and planning than the previous days of Senior Spirit Week. Students had to carefully choose their victim and find clothing that fit this teacher’s particular dress style: in some cases, students even had to coordinate ahead of time with their teachers. Nevertheless, many students still managed to pull it off and left fellow peers wondering what their history teacher was doing sitting in their science class.

Thursday, Feb. 8 – Meme Day:

Thursday was perhaps the day that allowed for the most variation amongst the senior dress code. Seniors took to the internet to find viral images and iconic characters in preparation for this day. They then created outfits that made them look as similar as possible to these well-known figures. Seniors came in costumes that represented a variety of bizarre characters that have caught the attention of the internet, from a younger Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to a minion. As it was the last day for seniors to dress up, many took the chance to have one last opportunity to come to school in the most creative outfits they could imagine.

Friday, Feb. 9 – Senior Picnic:

Senior Spirit Week concluded with the annual Senior Picnic. Seniors all went into the auditorium at the beginning of the day to watch High School Musical 3, award the senior superlatives and eat breakfast with their peers. After this, they went onto the field for a day of fun and games. There were multiple different activities to do once out on the field. Some seniors started games of soccer, football and volleyball between themselves, while others opted to go on the inflatable activities: mazes, a bungee run and a sweeper arm. Meanwhile, the DJ blasted music and even set up a dodge-ball game between the teachers and students. It was a great day to be outside, and the seniors took advantage of their chance to be in the warm weather.

“I had a wonderful time at Senior Picnic and I had the amazing opportunity to play so many different games,” senior Samir Elmir said.

This year’s Senior Spirit Week was a great success. There was a lot of participation from the senior class in all of the activities, and the obvious enjoyment on their faces definitely has made the underclassman eager for their chance to take part in these exclusive activities. The seniors still have a couple of events left to enjoy this year such as Grad Bash and Prom, but as they are aware of the little time they have left at Gables, they are trying to make the most of it before they leave.
