Every year, the International Baccalaureate Honor Society (IBHS) hosts an event called Bridge 4 Peace (B4P). B4P is a philanthropic event that raises money for causes that help people in need. The International Baccalaureate (IB) community supports an international issue that will benefit the lives of others, and help IB students become worldly students all at once.

The 2020 B4P cause will be to support an organization called “Asociacion Emergencia Ayacucho,” a Peruvian organization dedicated to aiding the youth homes and shelters in Ayacucho that provide children with services including education. This has the unique capability to transform generations and break the cycle of poverty. All the profits from the Bridge 4 Peace event will be donated to the organization.

The attendance of the student body is crucial in order for the event to be successful. The benefits of the event are multi-faced: in addition to aiding children abroad, being a part of a community that extends their resources to other countries enriches the students at Coral Gables. It makes them more knowledgeable while opening their minds to the world and how they are able to help those around them.

Communicating on an international scale in high school is significant to the growth of an IB student. IB students are taught how to communicate with others and identify problems and their solutions. B4P is way that IB students get to interact on a larger scale, and help the futures of those who are less fortunate.

Partaking in this event can benefit an individual to a great extent. After participating, students learn the problems people face outside of their own country and what they can do on a community level to help. It is pertinent that students contribute to the annual cause because they are helping change an entire life.

“I think it is really important to participate because we really do not get that many opportunities to participate in helping others on an international scale. I think it allows us to help places in the world that have less and at the same time be a part of the educational opportunities that we have as IB students,” junior Imgard Bonheur said.

In the event, performing arts groups from Gables High perform, such as Banghra and Troupe. There are tables filled with food and everyone can chat and enjoy the shows as a way to spend the night celebrating the impact Coral Gables has on the world.

“I honestly think it is a very fun event and it really represents how at Gables we reach out to the world. It is a night that is unforgettable for IB students because we can all see the change we are making in the world,” sophomore Daniel Rodriguez said.

Bridge for Peace is made so students appreciate the IB program and the international aspect that is integrated into it. This year’s B4P will be held on Feb. 13, 2020 at the Coral Gables Museum; make sure not to miss it!
