Is Reading Plus Worth It?
Oct 8, 2014
Reading Plus is an online reading program designed to improve students’ abilities to read faster, comprehend better, and learn new vocabulary. To most students, the program is boring and not very effective at improving reading skills. Others find it useless, since they already know how to read proficiently and are still forced to complete it. If a student feels like he or she is not improving, the question of whether doing Reading Plus is worth the time put into it or not will arise.
Reading Plus has tedious reading exercises that must be completed every week – or else students receive unsatisfactory grades from their teacher. The length of the required assignments is determined by each student’s reading level. This means that for many students, Reading Plus takes a little more than an hour a week to complete, while for others it takes multiple hours. Students who have longer assignments end up losing time to complete other homework or study for important tests.
Another major flaw in this reading program is that most of the stories students read are not very relatable, making them uninteresting to students. The stories are recycled year after year, which leads to students who stayed in the same reading level having to read the same stories again and again. To make things even worse, students that have read all of the available stories but have not yet advanced to the next level must reread the same stories until they advance.
According to an independent study conducted by Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) in the 2010-2011 school year, Reading Plus has significantly increased the reading ability of their students. Since then, the program has been implemented as a required home learning assignment for all Language Arts classes. Since the study proved that Reading Plus does increase most students’ reading abilities, teachers favor the program and believe it does wonders for their students.
“I really think [Reading Plus] is good because it helps with students’ reading speed for the AP English Language exam,” English teacher Mrs. Vazquezbello said.
Because the program is disliked by most students, sophomore Mark Braun created a petition to remove Reading Plus as a required home learning assignment. The fact that students go to such extreme lengths to end the use of Reading Plus shows how disliked the program is.
“I think Reading Plus is not helpful at all, and I don’t feel like I am improving [. . .] Also, when I read really fast it strains my eyes and gives me headaches,” Braun said.
The strict enforcement of this program causes students to develop negative associations with it. There are multiple ways to improve the program that would make students more interested and willing to complete their reading assignments. Until those improvements are made, students will have to try hard not to get distracted or fall asleep while doing their required Reading Plus homework.

Reading plus is dumb, you don’t improve at all, the content is boring, and it brings your grade down so severely. I have a 100% on ALL the assignments I have in ELA but because of reading plus this has brought my grade down to a B in my status. I have autism and ADHA so this makes it even harder for me. I have a 504 plan in place but because it resets it every week I don’t really get to use it or my teacher will say I can do it at home. You go to school to learn not home and if you do it’s because you are home-schooled. I have to bring my grade up in class so it will be an A and that means I have to do 32 MISSING READING PLUS assignments. If they put things that are more interesting in the books I wouldn’t be so mad or if the questions were easy.

I think reading plus is a sorry excuse of a web site and it doesn’t help my reading skills at all. I don’t learn jack shit and my teacher just does nothing but yell at you for not doing it.The reading is long and tedious vocabulary is slow and when you get done you’ll feel as if you’ve accomplish nothing because you gotta do it every week.I hope this site gets taken down I hate this website it stresses me out.

i myself am a 7th grade student and reading this article this is 100% correct but your forgot one thing it is also unfair grading wise if you get a question wrong it is -10% because 1/10 is 10% but when you get a question right on the second try it gives you half the question credit because you got it right on the second try so that means you got it right on the second try and it gives you half the credit for one question which 1 question is equivalent to 10% of the total reading plus if you get half the credit for 1 question it would be demoted 5% right? well that’s what you would think but when you get it right on the second try it demotes your 6% that doesn’t sound horrible until you put it on paper if you get four of the half correct questions in the reading plus you get 76% which means you were an unfair 4% behind and you have to do ANOTHER reading plus same thing if you get two wrong questions and 2 half credited questions you get 78% which pisses you off even more considering you should had gotten a 80% as well

saying reading plus is awful or discusting is an understatement the vocablary only shows the words for a few seconds and punishes you for checking it twice or more , they don’t for get they give you difnions that are clear as cement so you usally get them wrong. The see readers are even worse the irate feels like a time limit and you can’t go back to the other page, the questions are fustrating. in concluion reading plus shoud not still be esist

I absolutely hate reading plus. Im a student who has to do reading plus. Im actually supposed to be doing it right now. Anyways the stories are to long and all of them are boring. Give us a more up to date article. Something we would want to read about. James Charles? Shane Dawson? I mean really who wants to read about history. Not me. I dont mind the vocab or the c finder but the reading assignments are just terrible.

I’m a slow reader. that’s just how I read. I like to really soak in the stories and to picture what is happening. I also get super distracted a lot and tend to Zone out a lot. It’s not like I can fix that I can’t pay attention very well. Reading plus makes me read the stories so fast that I’m lucky if I read a sentence without having to try to figure out or plug in some words just so the sentence makes sense. Then the stories are so boring. I like reading about the animal articles the most because they are more interesting but they still suck. So I have to read these boring stories as fast as possible and then I have to do questions on them that I don’t know how to answer because I read the story so fast and it was so boring I forgot what happened in it. Just hearing somebody saying Reading Plus makes me feel heavy and like I’m about to do the worst chore of my life. I’d honestly rather do ALL my chores than do reading plus because doing my chores is faster and more fun than doing reading plus.

I don’t like reading plus. None of the stories interest me one bit. if the stories were actually interesting i would like the program a lot more. to me it just feels like a waste of time. for school we have to do around 85 minutes a week.

I also HATE reading plus and thanks to Mark Taylor who is the creator of readingplus because she made many children suffer! I was thinking of sending this to my strict ELA teacher but I’m not sure:
Dear Ms.Robinson I am respectfully sharing my scientifically approved opinion about reading plus which I found many people agreeing with.
According to CavsConnect : Reading Plus is an online reading program designed to improve students’ abilities to read faster, comprehend better, and learn new vocabulary. To most students, the program is boring and not very effective at improving reading skills. Others find it useless, since they already know how to read proficiently and are still forced to complete it. Some additional comment are,
I hate the Reading Plus program!!!!! Theres is no review of the vocabulary. My child has NO concept on how to use these words in everyday conversations. Theres no repetition to learn them. It has not improved my childs ability to read. This program is not research based and has no validity, and our so called educational leaders use this program. I m considering a lawyer to have this program removed.
Lola
I hate reading plus. It takes too long and it’s really boring the stories are mostly about environmental stuff that don’t apply any interest to me
Savanah
Me as a student thinks that reading plus is a waste of time there are no stories that interest me in any way. As well as there being a forced reading speed. Ex some days i don’t read as fast as other and cant keep up so i start to fail the questions and then my teacher starts talking to me and i have no response other than i couldn’t keep up. It all comes down to opinion but i think reading plus is very boring and has not improved my reading speed what so ever it has actually decreased my speed. I am very mad with the creators of reading plus and the people who approved it.

yes I agree also yo only can reread limited amount and that is so wrong.

I am a 6th grader and reading plus does not interest me at all. First, as all of you have said, reading plus does not improve on my reading or academics. Second it’s really unfair that you have to remember a question that’s 2 sentences long and there is 3000+ words. And i’m going to talk to reading plus and the whole school district I think we should have reading counts as a weekly assignment there is a VERY VERY large variety of books to choose from and the books are actually interesting since it has almost every single reading genre. Also I don’t know if your school does this or not but we already have a chapter book to read every nine weeks of the school year so I don’t understand why we have to do a book every week that does not interest us!

This program has a long term affect of eye damage. I watched my child read this and it hurt my eyes. Also, my child is bored with the stories, they are too long and nobody needs to speed read. Let’s slow these kids down instead of speed them up. What happened to the normal days when you read a book and then take a test? I truly believe this program is causing eye strain and long-term damage.

every day I have to do reading plus it me feel like throwing my chrome book out the window.
Anonymous • Dec 5, 2019 at 9:46 pm
Not worth it at all. Not even worth it if it’s free. If I was a superintendent of a school district, I wouldn’t even get it for the kids if I was offered a million dollars. Do I think kids benefit from stress, boredom, and zero help with reading? Obviously not. I just spent half an hour doing two “SeeReader” assignments. I didn’t even pass them. It’s completely retarded. When you fail one, your heart just sinks because you know there’s another 10-15+ minutes of boredom and stress. We can’t have this in a school system!!! Get rid of it NOW!

This is a great opinion piece. I challenge you then – in your last paragraph you speak of ways reading plus can improve. This piece would be even stronger if you came up with the ways that Reading Plus could change and update to make it more liked by student.
“There are multiple ways to improve the program that would make students more interested and willing to complete their reading assignments. Until those improvements are made, students will have to try hard not to get distracted or fall asleep while doing their required Reading Plus homework.”
What are the multiple ways that the program could improve?

i hate reading plus its a waste of my time and i use it because my teachers make me and i don’t want to i think we shouldn’t use it. Me as a student who uses reading plus says its a waste of energy opening up reading plus and getting start to work i think that’s just a waste and wh can’t we just read a book that we get to choose unlike looking at a screen all day and all night.

I have used Reading Plus for my child’s homeschool education, but I am not impressed by how easy it is to find the answers online. He showed me http://answeraddicts.com/reading-plus-answers, which seems to have all of the answers for his level. Any other parents have experience with this?
Tate • May 28, 2019 at 10:01 pm
I HATE READING PLUS SOOOO MUCH. The stories are confusing and read too fast. It takes like half an hour to finish one story. I don’t even know why teachers think this a good website for us. Reading Plus is only an addition to the books we are already reading, which are actually interesting. When you’re taking the quiz it only supplies 2 rereads. It should already have rereads out on every question.
Mikey • May 12, 2019 at 8:17 pm
my gosh when it comes to this… no its not worth it. whenever you finish a story and you get a low grade on it. it wont even give a crap and not give some supportive sentence..

Holy Crapola where do i begin with reading plus. It is the most lamest and boring thing to do im in 7th grade and i have to do 2 combos to finish a level, meaning i have to litteraly have to read 4 long, boring, tetious, stories and questions.thank god the vocabulary is easy as pie, because if it was hard i would take the F and do something else.like I swear we can’t do Visual Skills, and that is sad because it is the best thing in my opinion. I go at MJHS and now these days are horibble because this is the only thing we have to do on saturday which = upsetting
Holden Hayes • Apr 17, 2019 at 3:34 pm
It is a horrible site with stupid questions that don’t relate to the story, And the stories are super boring, like who wants to learn about a weird graffiti artist. Also, it’s a waste of time, because the grading is harsh like every time I rather get a 78 or 76 and that’s triggering especially when it’s the last question. In all Reading plus is a waste of time.

I think reading plus doesn’t work for me. i’m actually supposed to do it right now. it gives me a headache. not a lot of my classmates like it either. i’m at a higher level so my stories are pretty long. my vocabulary is fine, its just i’m a slow reader. i don’t know why its bad because school says that you can work at your own pace. I rarely complete my weekly reading plus.
Latasha Hall • Dec 7, 2018 at 11:20 pm
Yes, it’s worth the learning, before this program showed up in my life. I had lots of issue of not reading and there isn’t anything wrong with the program it’s us as students who are the problem. Nowadays we get frustrated with everything including math. So I’m saying to anyone that is skeptical is NO! It’s worth the cost, and if you don’t get one you’re not going to learn anything at all. Just saying what’s on my mind. So do not even make negative feedbacks.

My son loves Reading Plus. He attends a gifted school but reading was his weak spot. He tended not to read on his own for enjoyment. I have to say that the Reading Plus stories which cover a wide range of subject were something he grew to like and were responsible for making him a better reader and igniting his love of reading. For a while, the Reading Plus stories was the only thing he was reading, so I can honestly credit the program with raising his speed and comprehension enormously. Just recently, my son’s school quit offering Reading Plus to its students as an option. We are saddened by this decision. Perhaps the students at my son’s school weighed in with negative feedback similar to the views expressed here. But I have not been able to find anything that is as fun and effective anywhere online. Does anyone else feel the same way? I am curious because I know that blogs dealing with opinions about anything can become very narrow and one-sided. Is this the case here or do 99.9 per cent of users really feel this program is that bad?
Isaiah • Oct 5, 2018 at 12:49 pm

Reading plus is really not worth the work that my daughters put in to it. My eldest is a competitive swimmer attending trainings every morning and afternoon. My youngest is a competitive gymnast with 20 hours a week or more of training. As a mother, i do not approve of reading plus. My childrens teachers make them do reading plus in class, instead of face to face learning. My youngest also has ADHD and struggles to find the time to do her 6 reading plus tasks. She finds them so boring that she sometimes just dosent remember. My eldest has proscessing dyslexia and in SeeReader, she can only read at the speed of the guided bar and having proscessing dyslexia she struggles to understand the text because by the time she understands a phrase, she has already missed another part of the story. This leads to her not getting 80% or more in the questions meaning that she has to do more untill she has done her 4 seereaders with more than 80%. Overall i dont think that reading plus is actually helping my kids. It is making them feel bad about themselves when they dont achieve 80% or higher and frustrated having to redo them. they spend 6 hours a day at school anyways and then they are being sent home to do another 4 hours of it. They are slow readers so the see readers take about an hour or more each. with their busy schedules i really dont think that they need the extra stress of reading plus.

After reading this article and taking some time to scroll through the comments, I can agree with just about everyone here.
Reading Plus is an absolutely TERRIBLE program. As an 8th grade student (Soon to be a highschooler) I have to do it every week for a grade in my class. Every now and then we go to a computer lab within our school, and our entire class is forced to do the program for an hour and a half rather than something more entertaining and actually worth our time.
The SeeReaders that are supposed to improve your reading speed make zero since to me. How fast you read doesn’t matter – rather, how you take in information from what you are reading. The little textbox darts from line to line far faster than I can take time to comprehend the text and I end up not being able to read anything. Even at that, most of the stories are incredibly boring and provide me with no information that would be useful throughout my education, and any information they do give that isn’t mind-numbingly boring is incorrect. After that, during the quiz, I am expected to answer 10 questions about two-sentence answers that appeared once and were gone, and I am only ever given two chances to look back at the story and check.
Next, the ReadAround. Rather than holding the word on the screen, it flashes it for a brief moment then hides it again. If you try to see it again, the program will lower your score. This part of the program is entirely useless – it gives you two word definitions for a word and does a terrible job explaining how to actually use it in a sentence.
Last but certainly not least, we have the dreadful IBalance. This program is supposed to improve eye coordination, but all it really does is give you a pounding headache and hurt your eyes. The part where you have to find the broken O is probably the most entertaining thing about Reading Plus – and that’s still incredibly boring!
Our school has been forcing students to do this program, and I’ve had to read the same stories over and over during the three years I’ve been here. If someone does get the program shut down and removed from schools, I will certainly be grateful.

I am in the 8th grade and I have the highest reading plus scores in the entire 8th grade class. I have to spend about an hour doing my work because my see readers (The stories) are at the hardest level, these stories take SO LONG TO COMPLETE and it takes up most of my class time even though my reading speed is also the fastest(A little over 400 words per minute). I really do not feel like I am improving and the vocabulary does not help me at all. I have to spend an hour a week doing these stories that do not interest me, do not help me, and makes my life harder because I can’t always be in school all the time and I usually do not have internet so I have to stress out when I actually have to time to do so. It is stressful to me and many other students on this program. I have been in the higher levels all year and the stories always recycle so I can just memorize the answers to the stories and not even read them, which would be a huge problem for teachers if the child is challenged or illiterate. I feel like the creators could at least change the older stories as the years go by to help kids a little more, but instead they rely on the child to learn from the last year to learn from the program and hop on a higher level, but the child’s reading level could diminish throughout summer vacation. One one last note, I feel like the program takes too long (Like I said in the begging), but, students could be doing other homework or reading an actual book at least instead of reading plus at school or home. To make matters worse, students might not have a computer or internet at home so they have to hurry and focus all their time at school just trying to get their work or reading done on the computer at school. This program is hated by almost everyone who uses it and should be either fixed or taken down.

Does anyone agree that reading plus should be removed as a learning requirement? Because if you read all the comments on this site about this topic, you will find most of them point out the flaws and other negative feedback on the ReadingPlus program. The program should be only required to do if you don’t speak or understand English. As the article above suggests, all stories are recycled year after year, so why would I or anyone else in high school be forced to do a reading “improvement” program that isn’t even suggested by it’s own developers or author.
I looked on the official ReadingPlus website, and the program isn’t even CEO suggested and isn’t recommended. Looking at the star ranking of the program, it’s been ranked as a 3/5 stars by the site author. For this reason, ReadingPlus is not a reliable site to improve your reading skills.
Another flaw i’d like to point out is that during the Read Around section of the program, if the user doesn’t read at the desired speed of the program (only when the scan bar isn’t present), the user will be either timed out or kicked from the section after a short period of time. As another person on this site has said, reading is not about how fast you read, it’s about how well.
ReadingPlus dev team, if you’re reading this, then please for the love of god improve the damn site. And stop recycling the damn stories, and don’t change original stories like the Odyssey or the Legend of Thor. Because that’s how you get get a copyright infringement.
And please check your facts before talking about us Native Americans, we are very proud of our culture and can be offended if our heritage is not described accurately as we intend it to. I “highly encourage” ReadingPlus moderators to remove or correct the terminology used in the story “Fancy Dancers” as there are Native Americans who would frown upon it as it is offensive to us.
Please take every comment on this website into consideration as well, I think it would benefit every student who has to put up with your mediocre program. It is bad for business if you receive very poor customer feedback, in this case, students’ feedback as they are the only ones who actually have to do this program, teachers do not do anything when doing this program, my teachers just sit back at their desks and read a damn book. They could care less of what we do on the program, in fact, I’ve gotten away with cheating the program because the teachers are oblivious to what happens in the program. All the teachers do with the program is watch a progress bar with our names on it.
One more thing I’d like to add before closing, students who do this program could care less how fast they can read or how many words they can read a minute. They just want to get ReadingPlus over with and hope that they won’t have to do it next school year. I also would like to point out something that is slightly off-topic but does relate to this, in high school, where I am, students are forced to do a survey called Colleges of Colorado. It’s purpose is to try and make you select a job that you would be interested in and then selects a college in your area that suits your requirements, some students who take this survey don’t even intend to stay in the area or plan to move out of the country once they graduate and won’t be able to attend college in Colorado anyways. Now back to ReadingPlus, the program itself has three main sections: Read Around, See Reader and Ibalance. All of these sections are said to improve the user’s reading comprehension and the only section that helps with vocabulary comprehension is see reader. So the student must fail each time in order to see the word’s definition.

I agreee with all of you. I LOVE TO READ, but this program makes me not want to. It does not help me in ANYWAY with my vocabulary. In fact the vocab is sooooooooo hard that I dont even remember the words. I am a 5th grader, and my teacher says this program can help us learn to read. BUT, this program has not helped me, infact it has lowerd my grade. I think reading should add MORE interesting storys to read. It is also anoying when your to busy with homwork through the week that you cant finish reading plus. Because of that your grades get lowerd. As a student i think sitting down and reading a nice book is better that staring at a computer screen and getting tons of headaces. ( which i get alot of) reading plus should really improve or we should get RIDE of IT!!!
P.S please GET RIDE OF READING PLUS

I am a 6th grade student that has been forced to participate in doing reading plus and I agree with all of you. The website is underprepared and a total waste of time. There aren’t enough rereads, and the fact that they cover everything else up sucks. It has ruined my love for reading and it has stressed me out way more than needed.
Annonymous • Mar 13, 2017 at 12:01 pm
iBalance is said to “help” your eyes track better, when really it’s great for getting headaches and sore eyes. i’ve done more scan than i have flash in 2 weeks! it’s not letting me do flash!
i wish you could adjust the reading speed to your own pace actively and not passively… overall, ReadingPlus’s main purpose is to “help” people read better. i think it should only be required to do if you don’t speak English…
i’ve looked at other reviews about reading plus and it’s only rated 3/5 stars… it’s also not recommended by it’s dev team or author so if the author isn’t willing to do his or her own program, why should we?
I’m starting to think that teachers have nothing better to do than to sit around and talk all class period, my teacher literally sits at her desk and reads a book. i can’t wait to stop this readingplus bullcrap and move onto my junior year.
if you’re going to make a reading comprehension website, make the stories interesting and actually make them accurate, there’s a story i read that interprets The Odyssey wrong. Ulysses didn’t lead his men to kill Cyclops, it was Odysseus who did that. i can see about maybe over 10 copyrighted content within this program…
My son enjoys • Mar 10, 2017 at 10:05 am
My son enjoys reading plus stories because he can choose from a category of topic. He doesn’t like the speed reading thing that blocks the text out and makes you read at a certain speed. This is dificult for him when he misses what was typed and would like to take another look at that sentence. Welp, too late. The stories are still good, but having the text blocked out has caused him to miss a few questions.
The other part where you have to find the broken o is kind of fun, it’ s like a game.
The vocabulary part can get a little hard at times because the definitions are sometimes very similar. So he has to narrow it down to a specific meaning and he does not always get that part right.
I came to your website to see how much the reading plus program costs as i am considering using it with edunuity for my 10th grader next year. Y’all have a nice day. kisses. http://kyjuice.com
Anonymous • Apr 5, 2017 at 12:15 pm
if you haven’t noticed by now, the readingplus program isn’t CEO or Author trusted. the program is not useful and has not improved over the last 3-4 years it’s been online. if the program is so great, then why isn’t it recommended by the author or dev team. half of the article above lists every flaw with the program. there’s not enough facts to back up it’s “good” aspects. furthermore, your comment is invalid and is unjust. don’t force people to do a program they hate or don’t know if they like it or not. In conclusion, reading plus is not recommended to improve reading comprehension as it doesn’t. no aspect of it does.
Annonymous • Mar 8, 2017 at 12:06 pm
Another thing i’d like to add to my previous comment, the next passage in the story describes the formal and traditional clothing women wear to powwows for the dances… here’s what it says…
“Fancy shawl dancing, a similar dance to the men’s fancy dance, is known for the extravagant shawls worn by women…”
First of all, i want to make something clear… before naming things that are part of Native American culture, look up the proper name for it. Secondly, i would like to mention that the “shawls” are called regalias and they’re traditional and only worn by women. Anyone who asks one of those dancers would know this and use the correct and traditional name for them…
I’m getting tired of people not paying any attention to Native American culture and often doesn’t use proper terminology for it… if i see another story like this, i’m getting whoever made ReadingPlus to take every story about Native Americans off the program completely…
it’s offensive to me and it’s offensive to anyone else who has Native American heritage…
Annonymous • Mar 8, 2017 at 11:47 am
i’m a bit insulted on how ReadingPlus pictures Native Americans, in the story “Fancy Dancers”… i found the title offensive due to the fact that in a Indian Powwow we do traditional dances with regalias and formal Indian clothing. I would prefer if people used the word “Traditional” or “Appropriate” to describe someone’s heritage, if one of my Chieftens saw it, he or she wouldn’t be too pleased to know that our heritage is being put down for a second time… first mascots dressing up as our Chieftans and now this…
Very disappointed and disturbed by this…
and the beginning of the story, it defines our dances incorrectly. our dances are more spiritual than pleasureful…
this is the description it gives… “Fancy dancing is filled with spins, jumps and kicks…” or something along the that lines, the dance is not described like that at all… the movements are to represent spiritual aspects of our people, it’s not just “jumps, kicks and spins”…
i would much appreciate it if that story is taken down or at least told the right way to not upset any Native Americans out there, that would be great… People have absolutely no clue what happens during a powwow and don’t realize that the dances that take place on said event is important to us and everyone else who is performing the dance…

someone start a petition to remove readingplus as a education requirement in Colorado, D49.. i noticed someone did this for their town, i want one done for mine… thank god i won’t be doing it in 2018, i am not staying in Colorado forever…
i’m almost tempted to stay logged on my readingplus account and let someone steal it because i don’t care about it at all… i could care less about doing readingplus and would much rather do something else in class that’s actually productive and is not going to give me the “Do I seriously want to do this?” thought. i’ve also considered changing my password to something i’ll forget and lie that someone “hacked” my account…
Annonymous • Feb 27, 2017 at 12:17 pm
I have a lazy eye, ibalance is just making it worse and giving me a headache. some of the stories i’ve read on this program can most likely be flagged with a copyright fraudulent. the program is completely useless and should not be required to do.
i hate it.
on a scale of 1-10 on how bad it is, i would rate this a 10.

When I was about 11 years old I was walking through an educational site that had previously performed some IQ tests on me. I distinctly remember looking at a movie projector displaying a very small portion on an otherwise black screen. The projection was clearly simulating reading because it was moving rapidly from left to right, then vertically down. Very rapidly. I remember thinking what a ridiculous way to improve one’s reading. To my chagrin, almost 50 later, my son (now in high school) is being subjected to this same system! Essentially, Reading Plus is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Nobody reads the same. And, different texts and assignments are read entirely different completely dependent on the subject matter and the application of the reader! These are indisputable facts. The ONLY way to improve reading is reading itself. Practice makes perfect as they say. This program should be abolished. Furthermore, it may have detrimental effects. Some children get headaches. You can guarantee that if you follow the money trail forensically, it will tell the whole story. By the way, I have three college degrees in management sciences from the University of Miami and have worked at three comprehensive universities in the state of Florida.

problem w/ program: every aspect
Anonnymous • Mar 6, 2017 at 11:56 am
I agree, the program should be removed or at least make it so it’s not required. The program does nothing and improves no aspect of my reading comprehension… i already read perfectly, i was at a high school reading level in elementary school and middle school. if the program was on a star rating system, i would rate it a -10 out of -10 stars because it’s so bad.
and another thing, some of our PCs don’t support or have flash installed. or we don’t have time to do the program entirely…
UPSET MEATBALL • Feb 17, 2017 at 12:49 pm
Reading plus is so dumb. It wants you to improve your reading and comprehending skills, yet it only allows you 5 re-reads and BORING stories that don’t apply any interest to some people. The teachers get upset when the students get 50% or below on a reading story.. maybe if the stories was stories that INTERESTED me maybe then I would READ them and actually do good. The little scan bar goes way too slow for me, I wish you could adjust it to YOUR reading pace, not what the teachers think your pace is. Sometimes teachers don’t know EVERYTHING that they claim to know. I know my teachers don’t know half the stuff they claim too. Reading plus just does work so the teachers can sit around and do absolutely nothing. I don’t have a problem with reading, I love to read, but reading plus is just so darn dumb and a huge waste of time. I started using reading plus in 6th grade because it was required, i’m now almost done with 7th grade and still having to do reading plus, the thing I hate is that they have the same stories from last year that I read. Reading plus is NOT worth it.

I FIND IT VERY UNFAIR THAT CHILDREN LIKE ME HAVE TO DO READING PLUS. I’VE HAD TO DO IT SINCE KINDERGARTEN! I BALANCE AND SEEREADER HAVE NOT TAUGHT ME ANYTHING AND ARE NOT EDUCATIONAL, WHATSOEVER. READAROUND IS VERY STUPID AS WELL. I FIND IT UNFAIR TO HAVE TO ORE THAN 80 PERCENT TO BE ABLE TO GET IT TO COUNT. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS LIKE THAT SO TEACHERS KNOW THE CHILDREN ARE ACTUALLY READING THE STORY, BUT THERE ARE MANY CHILDREN WHO WORK VERY HARD TO GET MORE THAN 80 AND HAVE TO READ 7 STORIES INSTEAD OF 4 BECAUSE “THEY DIDN’T DO GOOD ENOUGH”.

Avery • Nov 17, 2016 at 4:28 pm
I have to do the program as a grade in my class. last quarter when our progress reports came out i had a D because i didn’t complete all of my reading plus. it doesn’t even count when we get a 78% or 79% on each lesson. i did 10 when the required is 5 and only passed 3 of them. I talked to my teacher about it and she even admitted that i do great in her class but i only got the grade i did because i didn’t do my reading plus and now the same thing has happened to me this quarter. but all I can say is that if reading plus isn’t helping than its pointless to be doing it.

Thank you all for posting your thoughts on Reading Plus. I am currently doing a sabbatical research project and part of my research is to look at Reading Plus. The more I learn about Reading Plus, the more dismayed I become.
When I have finished my work, I will post again. My project includes a critique of Reading Plus and I will post a summary of that part of my report.
But, for now, let me say that you all have excellent instincts. Automated reading programs have a long history in the United States and they are not research-based. The sales pitches are meant to appear “scientific” but they are not. These programs are driven by profit motives.
Luann Methvin is correct. Speed in reading is not a goal. In fact, there are physiological limits to the speed we can read. Further, reading speed is tied to each particular language depending on the “code” (for example, Italian can be read at a much higher speed than English because in Italian one letter represents one sound, whereas in English we only have 26 letters to represent 40+ sounds so a number of letters do several jobs).
Reading is a form of thinking. We read to construct meaning. While it is true that extensive free reading can help us expand our world knowledge and vocabulary, we go to school to receive instruction.
It’s a great pity to hear that Reading Plus is turning young people off to reading. Reading is a unique way to access information. It is private, done at our own pace, and done according to our interests.
For those of you, who don’t like reading non-fiction, I suggest you seek out non-fiction that interests you, especially if you are in middle or high school.
Books give you freedom because no one is deciding what you should focus on and no one is controlling the speed of information. When you watch a movie, someone has already decided what you should look at and what is important. The movie makers are deciding the speed of information delivery. When you read, you choose all these things, including the choice to close the book because it’s boring you to death.

Hello Lia,
I am very interested in your research. Our district is in the early stages of considering Reading Plus and I am interested in your concerns. In looking for research, I found the WWCH gives it a “potentially effective” rating but based on only one qualifying study. I have had little success finding other independent, nonbiased studies and would greatly appreciate learning what you find in terms of valid, reliable studies and your own findings. Thank you!

I’m so pleased I found this article! I totally agree with what everyone is saying. My son is 11 and is a brilliant reader. Reading plus is switching him off from reading. It’s an awful, boring programme! Give them books, ask them questions, talk about the books in class not flashing dots and boring stories on the screen. I’ll be sharing this article with other parents and my sons school. Thank you from New Zealand.

I Am an 9th grader right now, yes i’m in high school and doing this, this program is absolutely useless! It provides boring stories and when you get something wrong it doesn’t tell you what is wrong. This program is a drag to for homework and i’m on s level, making it a lot harder.
Just in conclusion, i recommend that you just stick to reading books and not buy this program.

At my school, we are making efforts against Reading Plus. The problem is with Reading Plus is that even if you get rid it, it is very mainstream and will be hard to get over. But I know that the teachers are more creative than what Reading Plus’ standardized format says. My grades go down because of Reading Plus. I am a very good student and get A’s in all of my classwork but Reading Plus brings my grade down majorly.
Vince • Feb 11, 2016 at 9:34 am
Thanks to this program I went from an A in English to a 46 F. We don’t have the time at home, nor do other classes let us do it. Even the class that grades it barely gives us the time to do it.

I help my grandchild with this reading plus program every so often and it always surprises me how useless it is. Reading fast should not be the goal! Reading with comprehension and proper use of punctuation and innotations is what she should be learning. I am an avid fast reader and when I read along with her I completely loose the meaning of the story because I am trying to keep up with the scrolling bar. I don’t want her to loose the love of reading, but she is because of this horrible program. How sure are these teachers that the parents aren’t the ones reading and answering the questions? Get smart and go back to the old way of teaching kids how to read. The school system and the teachers are just lazy!
Jon • Nov 2, 2015 at 1:34 pm
I am also very unhappy with this program. The article mentions only a few of the problems we are having. If my child fails the comprehension quiz, she is forced to read another selection and take another quiz to get credit. There is no review of what she failed, no way to improve or measure improvement, no way to go back and review the article, no vocabulary. It could be a great program but its shortcomings are making my daughter’s life miserable. I have sat through the lessons with my child and even I have difficulty with them.
EN • Nov 14, 2015 at 7:06 pm
Well, I’m a student, so my opinion may not be as convincing as an adults. However, if anyone is actually reading this, here’s my two cents on it anyways.
I’m very unsatisfied with this program myself. I am a 7th grader, we have to do this program in my English class. Earlier this year, I finished graduated from SeeReaders (finished level M) this year and I finished it last year too. The point of this isn’t to brag, I want to point out some more issues I have noticed both years of doing it though. (Warning: This is pretty long.)
For one, we don’t get enough rereads. This is a problem mostly for the higher level readings. When we have over 3,000 words to read, it’s pretty difficult to remember the smallest details that they spent literally 2 sentences covering the question.
I can see how G-rate (the part where the text is blurred our except for the area in the white line) could help slower readers, but it’s pretty useless and can even make reading harder once you get to higher levels. When one comes across a large word they’ve never seen or heard before, what do they do? They slow down and try to process the word. When you’re dealing with G-rate, that’s a feat near impossible to do. I’ve missed out on learning quite a few nice words because of this-which sometimes makes the questions very difficult to answer.
We get no explination on the questions. At my school, there’s another (very) hated program we have to do in math called Study Island. However, one thing I like about that program versus Reading Plus is that it actually shows you an explanation behind the answers. On Reading Plus, there is no explination. If you get something wrong, you’re expected to be able to just figure out what you did wrong without any help from them. Learning from mistakes is important, so I feel they should tell you what your mistake was so you actually learn something.
Sometimes the answers don’t even make sense. When I was doing the passage about Storm Chasers, one of the questions’ (I think it was the one about what you would do if you found out a hurricane was approaching fast and might hit you or something along those lines) answers made no sense. I even had my parents, who have lived in areas prone to hurricans, with me and they agreed it made no sense. I get that their trying to test us on what we read, but you’d think it would require some common sense.
Since most kids prefer to read fiction over non-fiction, there should be more fictional stories. Not saying their shouldn’t be any non-fiction stories, but their should be more of a balance. Almost all the stories are non-fictional, and it’s pretter rare you’ll ever remember anything about the story other than how much you hated it anyways. I think there is room to add in some more fictional stories to add more of a variety. There should also be more stories for each catagory. I would always read the How Things Work catagory first, but after that I would be forced to read Art and Culture stories. I feel that there should more stories per catagory so if there is one particular catagory you like, you read those more often the ones you don’t like.
For ReadAround (the one where they flash the vocabulary word and you have to pick teh definition), I’m very confused. What the (heck) is the point in flashing the word rather than just leaving it up their?! It would make life easier if they would just leave the word up there for us.
Last (for now) but defidently not least, it’s pretty glitchy at times.
Overall, Reading Plus has potential, but the potential is overshadowed by the many parts that have…room to improve.
Brahms • Apr 23, 2016 at 1:25 am
I agree. Reading Plus is a total waste of time. I’m currently an 8th grader and CANNOT WAIT to go to highschool, where there hopefully isn’t Reading Plus. I’m fine with using a computer, but I sometimes think about the kids who don’t have full access or any extra time, because there’s !more to be done in school than reading plus. And like multiple people have already mentioned the stories, and how they are NOT interesting, and they do NOT in any way improve my ability to read and write. I believe it is a waste of time. Like many others have mentioned, you can only read the stories once without being able to reread them freely. I hope this system is removed, because I loved having a regular book report and/or regular weekly language homework than this stupid system.
THEOGREADINGPLUSHATER • May 16, 2017 at 10:24 pm

Alexinator • Mar 3, 2017 at 6:04 am
I agree.
Although my opinion might not be taken very seriously since I’m only a 6th grader, I think Reading Plus is a pointless, unnecessary and tiring program.
At our school (which is a primary school, and goes from prep/pre-primary to grade 6) we are often made to do so-called “See Readers” in class, and a ridiculous amount of Reading Plus is assigned to us every week for homework.
Practically everybody in my grade hates Reading Plus.
Last year some boys in my class were thinking of starting a petition to end it at our school, and a girl in my class even claimed her scores in reading had actually lowered since we started using it.
I’m thinking of starting a petition with my friends this year to end it, since (although I am an AVID reader) Reading Plus is SERIOUSLY off-putting.
And, to boot, there are so many better alternatives; there are loads of programs that serve the same purpose but don’t have any similarities to medieval torture whatsoever!

Christian • May 2, 2016 at 10:14 am
And also the questions are above reading level and the goal shouldn’t be to read faster that is what pulls you off track of reading a story you should be able to read at your own pace and not the pace on the story that your reading.

I simply think that readingplus is a waste of time. My child has no idea how to use these words in a sentence and the stories are well, just to boring. If I had three words to describe reading pulse it would be WASTE OF TIME. The stories are boring and my child does not like to read them. If there is a boring story, we probably won’t understand or take notice to the questions. The vocabulary is the only thing I find alright with this program. If your gonna read a story make sure it’s a good one. -Geek critics
Drake malike • Feb 23, 2017 at 2:37 pm
My child would rather read the newspaper now and he certainly has no interest in that. If he doesn’t like the stories or understand the words how is he gonna get his homework done? Reading faster makes his eyes strain and the words just run past him. Readingplus should d something better with their money!

I KNOW RIGHT!!! I hate this program so much! My teacher doesn’t even teach our class all she does is sit on a computer screen and watch a stupid bar with their student’s name on it while eating her stupid salty potato chips. Reading plus is a big waste of time the stories suck! The only good ones are like the ones that are like fairytale and fiction and stuff but they barley have those all they got is stupid ass environment stories that are just to boring. And the worst part is that if we don’t pass 100 seereaders by the end of the year we have to go to summer scho ol and if we don’t attend summer school then we flunk the grade. I don’t know if the 100 seereader stuff apples to you but anyways reading plus should be shut down right away!!

Reading plus is way too much for a kid to handle we already go to school for 8 hours a day have an hour worth of homework and on top of that reading plus. We need to stop this!

Reading plus is a lot of stress on me and it is too hard to focus on all of the content required. I do not like or recomend it. It has not helped with my spelling or reading. It needs some Jesus.
