Cashing in on Pacquiao vs Mayweather Fight
May 14, 2015
The so called “fight of the century” between professional boxers Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. took place on Saturday, May 2 in Las Vegas, California. This match alone generated the most amount of money in the history of professional boxing. However, fans who made big bets are beginning to question the genuineness of the fight due to the fight not matching the hype it created.
“I do not think the hype was worth the fight. Honestly, I think the fight was rigged because it looked like Pacquiao did nothing but stand there and get beat up. Then again, I may be biased, because I do not like Mayweather at all – he is not like Pacquiao who is down to Earth and humble,” sophomore Iris Cordero said.
The match generated upwards of $400 million from ticket sales, pay-per-view orders and endorsements; this makes the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight the second most lucrative sporting event, behind Super Bowl XLVIII. Risk takers who decided to join in on the money making made astronomical bets in favor of their favorite fighters. Pacquiao, as the underdog, was the fan favorite. However, that did not stop people from betting big bucks on Mayweather.
It is only natural that a professional boxing match of this level would make this amount of money, since the boxers involved are big names in the industry. Before the match, Mayweather had a flawless record of 47 wins and 0 losses and Pacquiao had a noteworthy record of 57 wins, 5 losses, and 2 draws. Their records made Mayweather the most likely winner, earning him 60% of the prize money and leaving Pacquiao the other 40%.
The match itself was average at best and did not live up to what social media made it to be. Keeping that in mind, it is hard to believe that this event was actually worth all the money it made. Throughout most of the fight, Mayweather simply ran around Pacquiao and dodge him punches. Not to mention Mayweather’s infamous “grappling” that went viral along with other pictures from the fight including one were Mayweather resembled Ariana Grande.
The lackluster “fight of the century” between Pacquiao and Mayweather will go down in history as the biggest let down in modern boxing. The boxers maybe able to redeem themselves in a future rematch that Mayweather agreed to that will happen one year after Pacquiao has surgery on his injured shoulder. The money generated by the match was made from angered fans who felt they had been swindled.
