The much-anticipated team-up of two of Marvel’s most beloved anti-heroes, Deadpool and Wolverine, has finally arrived. Directed by Shawn Levy, this film takes the Phase 4 Marvel formula and injects it with a dose of unfiltered chaos and humor that both respects the legacy of these characters and pushes their boundaries in exciting new ways.
From the opening scene, it is clear that Deadpool, played once again by Ryan Reynolds, is in top form. His trademark quips, fourth wall breaks and energy are on full display, reminding us why this character has become a fan favorite. But this time, Deadpool is not flying solo. Despite his death in the movie Logan, Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Wolverine, acting as a perfect foil to the chaotic and humorous nature of Deadpool’s character.
Their dynamic is the heart of the film—Deadpool’s irreverence constantly clashing with Wolverine’s stoicism, leading to some of the film’s most memorable moments. Whether they’re bickering, fighting side by side or sacrificing themselves for the other, Reynolds and Jackman create a duo that is both entertaining and surprisingly poignant.
The film begins with Deadpool searching for the body of Wolverine in the hopes of saving his universe and loved ones from deletion by the Time Variance Authority, an organization which monitors the flow of time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This leads into Deadpool having a run-in with TVA agents, jumping into an exciting action sequence along with one of the most iconic movie introductions of the modern age. NSYNC’s hit single “Bye Bye Bye” plays as Deadpool fights through the agents using remnants of Wolverine’s skeleton, providing fans with an ironic juxtaposition between the gory visuals and Deadpool’s comedic and upbeat dancing.
“The opening scene of [the movie] is definitely one of the most memorable parts of the entire experience. Not only is the song a classic, but Deadpool’s dancing was funny considering he was in the middle of a fight. Even if it got a little repetitive, I really enjoyed that introduction,” senior Salvatore Casciola said.
Following the opening, Deadpool begins traveling between universes, searching for a version of Wolverine who might be able to aid him in saving his universe. After visiting a variety of universes and a multitude of comic references, he finds a Wolverine which he takes along with him as he escapes from the TVA.
Throughout the film, Marvel enthusiasts were treated with the unexpected returns of beloved characters, as well as introductions to new ones. Most notably, Chris Evans, who ended his role as Captain America with the release of Avengers: Endgame, reprised his role as Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four. A sharp contrast to his previous character, Evans’ portrayal of the Human Torch gave him with more freedom in terms of humor, providing fans with enjoyable moments of humor.
“As a big fan of the previous movies, I can surely say that this movie did them justice. I loved how they made callbacks to other events and characters that we met in the two other films instead of leaving them in the background. It really feels like a genuine Deadpool movie,” senior Levi Perez said.
Another fan-favorite character in the film came through the card-loving hero, Gambit, who was played by Channing Tatum. Coming from a Cajun background, Gambit’s heavy accent and Louisiana dialect offered memorable moments of comedic relief that have taken over the Internet since the movie’s release.
“Gambit was one of the main highlights of [Deadpool and Wolverine]. Even though I was confused when he first came on, his one-liners and strong accent made for some funny jokes, and I love the attention that social media has put on the character,” senior Bryan Martinez said.
The soundtrack is another highlight, featuring a mix of classic rock, pop culture hits, and an original score that perfectly complements the film’s tone. Above all, NSYNC’S “Bye Bye Bye” and Madonna’s hit “Like a Prayer” in the climax set the tone for the film’s comedic nature.
“This movie already has one of the most iconic soundtracks out of the majority of movies that have come out in the past few years. It gets really ironic at times, and just adds to the humor of traditional Deadpool movies,” senior Justin Luis said.
Deadpool and Wolverine is a thrilling, hilarious and surprisingly emotional ride that delivers on all fronts. It is a film that not only meets the high expectations of fans but also surpasses them, offering a fresh take on both characters while honoring their rich histories.
