Drum roll, please! Coral Gables Senior High has revealed the highly anticipated Homecoming theme for this year: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Like every Homecoming, the themes are significant in setting the tone for the dance, from what people will wear to the atmosphere surrounding the event. With this in mind, many Cavaliers have had mixed reactions upon the release of this year’s theme. While this mythical theme inspires a multitude of different attire options and makes for a captivating night, there are some questions surrounding the limitations of such a restricting theme. Matching the excitement and uncertainties, anticipation for this year’s dance set for Oct. 11 rests upon the students.
The comedy play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” by William Shakespeare will come alive at Homecoming night. Because of its captivating fairy-like genre, it will allow Cavaliers to have a variety of choices for finding their dresses and suits. This theme urges Lady Cavaliers to arrive in beautiful gowns that are dainty and cocktail-styled. At the same time, the men will come in classy black bowties or neckties and cool-toned colors.
Thanks to its gorgeous fairy-like color palette that sets a mystical mood, this theme will undoubtedly make Oct. 11 a night to remember. From twinkling lights to whimsical floral displays, every detail will transport Cavaliers into a land of faeries. These stunning visuals are sure to not only enhance the overall experience but also encourage laughter and joy, promoting a sense of connection among friends turning the evening into a surreal experience.
The flowing dresses add a pinch of elegance, making Cavaliers feel like they have stepped into a fairytale, and the decorations filled with beauty and wonder, will soon leave lasting memories to look back on. Similarly, the combination of glitter, twinkling lights and flowers creates an enchanting atmosphere that will undoubtedly draw everyone in. These specific details are what constitute an elegant theme for the evening and what will leave guests cherishing Homecoming long after the night ends.
“When I saw the Instagram post about the theme of Homecoming, I was thrilled. To be honest, I have always liked the fairy-like vibes. So, I feel like that night will become a memory that I will always look back to when I am older. I can’t wait for Homecoming night to get here already,” sophomore Thalia Miller said.
Despite the feeling of creativity, students may also feel that a theme like a “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” leaves little room for uniqueness, especially for an event as important as Homecoming. Due to its specific color scheme and style, students will be limited to using colors like earthy greens and blues. Although this range of colors may be in the interest of some students, others might feel restricted by this concept.
“I was originally planning to wear a sparkly pink dress I saw while dress shopping, however, after discovering the theme, I’m unsure about what to wear. I usually wear girly pinks for events like this, and I feel like I’m running out of options with this theme. Although I could still wear the dress, I would feel out of place if the rest of the students are following the color scheme,” sophomore Gabrielle Solomon said.
The theme is also dull, leaving no room for creativity or any sort of excitement. It will bring a calm, quiet vibe because of its forest-type style, which is not ideal for a Homecoming event. With such a well-known tradition, students expect something that stands out. Cavaliers have agreed that the magical forest setup is a cute idea, but it will not be memorable in the long run. Homecoming brings high expectations, ones which this theme is incapable of meeting. In the case of ““Midsummer Night’s Dream,” it is easy to consider the limitations of such an unoriginal idea.
“I feel like it’s too random and people won’t understand it. Homecoming is supposed to be full of energy and excitement, not like a garden party. It’s like they picked the theme because it sounded cool and ignored whether or not it fits the vibe of the event,” freshman Ashley Franco said.
Now as we wait for this year’s homecoming, excitement and worries fill the atmosphere. With this theme, there could be a wide range of possible outfits and the magical feeling will surely be present. Yet, many Cavaliers have expressed their concerns over this theme, naming it unoriginal and boring, while also questioning one’s ability to actually find a suitable attire. These unknowns will continue to rise among Cavaliers until the event reveals the successes or failures of “Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
