American actress and comedian Nikki Glaser has garnered widespread attention for her hosting of the 82nd Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 5, and the success has transitioned toward a noteworthy increase in Glaser’s popularity on social media. Making history as the first female to host the ceremony alone, she did not disappoint, cracking multiple jokes that kept the famous attendees and audience at home laughing. Through Glaser’s sense of humor, she transformed a standard ceremony into a highly entertaining evening.
“I definitely think that some of the awards given weren’t fair and rather biased, especially Wicked. I feel like it was overhyped, and there were better nominees that could have won. Although I disagreed with some of the winners, I think Nikki kept me wanting to continue to watch the rest of the event,” senior Isis Meraz said.
Glaser’s appearance at the Golden Globes was possible in her exceptional appearance in Neftlix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady.” Her outstanding performance granted her The New York Times’s Comedian of the Year, promoting her comedic ability and eventually giving her the opportunity to perform at the Golden Globes.
“Some of the awards were great, but a few were just like, seriously? I was annoyed at first, but then Nikki Glaser would come on and make a joke, and I had forgotten about what I was mad about. Honestly, she made the ceremony so much better to the point that I feel like without her, I would have been so bored. I already liked her before, because I watched her appearance on the Tom Brady Roast, and the second I found out she was the host of the Golden Globes, I knew I had to watch it. Now, I can’t imagine the Golden Globes without her,” sophomore Sofia Duarte said.
Glaser was more than just the host of the Golden Globes; she was also a nominee for an award. Her Home Box Office Max special, “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die”, was nominated in the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category. However, when Ali Wong received the award over her, Glaser immediately cracked a joke and used her signature humor to lighten the mood, and it was as if the loss never happened. Thus showcasing her ability to keep a professional attitude and not let her emotions get in the way.
“To be honest, I don’t find award ceremonies entertaining but after seeing a compilation of all the jokes [Nikki Glaser] told at the Golden Globes, I decided to watch it. The video came on my TikTok for you page, and I watched the entire video. After reading the comments I decided to watch her roasting Tom Brady, and I think that she was probably even funnier on that special,” senior Bridgett Vasquez said.
It is not easy to gain a likable reputation after hosting a performance but Glaser had tailored her jokes to the perfect moment, calling out famous actors, telling all-around laughable jokes and reading the room perfectly. These specialties captured her audience which led many social media users to use their platforms to praise the engaging experience she delivered. This performance alone allowed Glaser to leave a lasting impression and solidify her reputation as a standout comedian in the industry.
A performance as popular as Glaser‘s does not come without its own controversy. While many were content with her jokes, some critics found them offensive, leading to debates online. However, after appearing on The Howard Stern Show, Glaser shared that she had purposefully refrained from telling the most extreme jokes that could have been inappropriate, saying that she respected the crowd and the occasion.
“I don’t watch many award ceremonies but after seeing Nikki’s performance, she made me watch all of her most famous jokes on YouTube. My favorite scene of her hosting was when she called out Zendaya and told her ‘You were incredible in Dune. Oh, my God. I woke up for all of your scenes. You are so good.’ I found it hilarious because when I was in the theaters watching Dune, I was bored and tired,” sophomore Emily Garcell said.
The audience was not only thrilled about Glaser’s performance, but the Golden Globes producers were equally so. The success of her hosting debut had been the first step in a new direction for her career: signing a three-year deal with the Golden Globes as a host. Alongside her return to the Golden Globes in 2026 and 2027, her pay is set to increase significantly. Her success in the Golden Globes along with the popularity of her comedy makes it clear that Glaser is not going to slow down anytime soon.
