5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) started as Youtube stars (Hemmo1996) in 2011, covering popular songs, and sharing its talent with common people. At first, there were three members, Luke Hemmings (lead vocalist), Calum Hood (bass and backup vocalist) and Michael Clifford (lead guitarist). The band became more popular in 2012 as newer, more well-known songs were covered, and the fan base spread around the world; at the same time, they recruited a drummer from a nearby area- Ashton Irwin. To continue the road to fame, Louis Tomlinson from One Direction asked the band to go on the TMH (Take me Home) tour with them in 2013, and they gladly agreed. Now, in February 2015, they have six albums out and tens of thousands of fans, called the ‘5SOS fam’, all around the world. Their latest album, Live 5SOS, is filled with many hits that launched them into superstardom.
Amnesia (Live)
Amnesia is a heart-string-plucking track that begins slow and steady; the listener can immediately sense that it is a sad song. The lyrics speak of a lost friendship and lost love, something that most people could not stop playing on Valentine’s Day. “I wish that I could wake up with Amnesia, and forget about the stupid little things…” Although the song is very sad, the music video is a bit more cheery, looking at the loss in a positive light by playing scenes about good times with friends, memories of home and a variation of little, detailed events.
Good Girls (Live)
Well, isn’t that a nice thing to hear upon listening to a song? Upbeat and rebellious, why wouldn’t you care to listen? Along with the sassy lyrics, it is a great song to play when hanging out with friends, or when feeling in need of a bit of stress relief. “She said to me, forget what you thought, ‘Cause good girls are bad girls that haven’t been caught! So just turn around and forget what you saw, ‘Cause good girls are bad girls that haven’t been caught!” The music video was released on Oct. 10, 2014 and has 17,833,290 views!
What I Like About You (Live)
“That’s what I like about you.. You hold me real tight. Tell me I’m the only one, Wanna come over tonight? Yeah!” Well, doesn’t that sound… fun! This song is a cover, and has been performed by the group multiple times, ever since its starting days. Most of the initial videos were marked as private, and unfortunately, this one is too. Recently, the 5SOS (pronounced 5-sauce) boys posted the “What I Like About You” music video, and have compiled more than 10,000,000 views, 98% of people rating it a thumbs up.
She Looks so Perfect (Live)
Usually, when people see the title of this song, they get very confused. She looks so perfect? How? Why does that matter to me? Well you’ll have to see the music video to find out. “She Looks So Perfect” was one of the band’s very first videos and it has an Extended Play (EP) titled She Looks So Perfect. The song is upbeat, like most of the songs on the 5SOS album, and the title is just as confusing as the lyrics. “She looks so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear, and I know now, that I’m so down!” When you watch the video there’s actually a bit of ‘inappropriateness’ involved.
“I can’t wait until I see them live…again,” junior Emily Hernandez said.
Overall, I would say that this album is spunky, rebellious and something you would not want to miss out on! You can buy the whole 16-track album for only $12.99, so why not give the five Australians a try?
