Zayn Malik’s “Mind of Mine”
Album: “Mind of Mine”
Artist: Zayn Malik
Genre: Pop
Release Date: March 25, 2016
Our Rating: B+
Former One Direction member (1D) Zayn Malik dropped his first solo album, “Mind of Mine,” on March 25; Malik introduced his first album as a solo artist by releasing “Pillowtalk.” Fans can look forward to either 18 or 20 tracks, depending on whether they buy the deluxe, Target-exclusive album or the standard album, irrespectively. The songs on the album are very catchy, and are filled with cool beats and impeccable vocals. The album derives great influence from R&B and has a chill, lounge-like vibe. Although the album is very entertaining, it is rather repetitive. Nonetheless, Malik was successful in showing the world who he really is through this album, which was (presumably symbolically) released exactly a year after he left 1D.
“Pillowtalk”
This first single from “Mind of Mine” was released Feb. 3. The music video of “Pillowtalk” has received over 200 million views. Malik made the right choice coming out with this song as his first single, due to the fact that it was a hit that caused everyone to excitedly speculate about the whole album. It has a catchy beat and Malik’s vocals are spectacular. “Pillowtalk” really brings out a new side that fans have never seen before, in light of the fact that he is producing music that he enjoys. This R&B track definitely outshines the other songs in the album.
“Intermission: Flower”
This is the only song on the album that Malik sang in Urdu, the native language of Pakistan. It is a very short song, but the meaning behind it is very powerful. Additionally, it’s wonderful that he is showing fans his family roots. This soft yet moving ballad is definitely a favorite amongst fans.
Tracklist:
There are two songs on the CD that demonstrate to fans who Malik really is. In “Before,” both the video and lyrics describe how he’s not holding back anymore and that he’s going to do what he wants. “Before” shows how Malik is standing up for himself and that he’s not going to give up. In “Drunk,” fans can see Malik’s romantic side. It talks about how one girl can completely change him into a different, but better, person. Overall, the album has been a great success and it’s definitely a great listen. Fans are looking forward to see how Malik’s solo career will go in the future.
