It is no surprise that COVID-19 has affected people in inexplicable ways. In fact, there are a plethora of different circumstances that people had to deal with all around the world in order to just get by. At the beginning of this global pandemic, people were forced to solve problems they never thought they would have. Financially, physically and mentally, this has affected everyone in some way. Netflix’s new series “Social Distance” touches on different situations people may have struggled with during quarantine.
Every episode was 17-20 minutes long, and every episode had a different issue that was addressed. The entire series was filmed socially distanced. All the episodes included various ways of online communication. They did a very good job of showing the struggles of communicating online and its effect on people on and off the screen.
“I really liked how each episode was a different situation because it really shows how it affected so many different types of people in the U.S. and across the globe,” junior Abby Colodner said.
Some examples of the issues talked about were online funerals, relationship problems in the home, a loved one being contaminated, private businesses being shut down and no childcare. These are all important things that people faced on a day-to-day basis. As businesses shut down because they were not essential, people lost money and their jobs. In addition, those who still had jobs could not afford childcare, or simply had no one to care for their children at all. Many people had to file for unemployment to get checks from the government in order to survive and not reach rock bottom. It was a very dark time for many people, and this show accurately displays that.
“The uncertainty that everyone dealt with at the beginning of everything was portrayed very nicely in this series,” senior Genesis Caceres said.
“Social Distance” was a beautiful way that can connect people through their struggles. In just a few episodes, they have broadened peoples’ perspectives and showed them to be more mindful of others’ conditions. As coronavirus changed everyone’s lives, this show proved to us that it is always important to help each other during hard times.
