“Free Guy” follows a bank worker who believes that he plays an insignificant role in his world. In reality, Guy is a side character in a video game- at least until he decides to take matters into his own hands. He must become the main character in his own story and go on an adventure in order to save his friends from their impending deletion by the game’s creator.

Ryan Reynolds stars as Guy along with cameos from many other famous Youtubers. The inclusion of popular gamer Youtubers like Jacksepticeye, Pokimane and Ninja was a smart decision on the director’s part as these content creators have a collective 58.09 million subscribers across their channels. “Free Guy” managed to combine the visuals of a video game with real life by showcasing memorable faces like Chris Evans, the late Alex Trebek and Channing Tatum. The Disney Franchise made an appearance as well in the form of The Hulk’s fist and a Star Wars lightsaber when Guy must use weapons in order to defeat a buff version of himself, Dude.

In just 1 hour and 55 minutes, “Free Guy” creates a completely immersive experience with amazing computer generated imagery and well done transitions between real life and the video game. The comedy seems genuine save one character, Antwan.

“Taika was portraying a woke boomer, but the acting aspect fell short,” senior Marianpaola Chacon said.

In terms of cinematography, gamers will not be disappointed at the excellent quality of the film’s special effects. The sound effects and graphics are enthralling and sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. With a budget of over $100 million, this movie appeals to people of all interests by showcasing famous faces from all genres of the entertainment industry. The soundtrack included an entertaining original score with the occasional upbeat pop song to build the mood.

The movie presents a subtle message about humans and what truly makes us important. Everyone can be a “main character” in their own story and take charge of their life. At the beginning of the movie, Guy thinks his repetitive routine is normal and perfect even though every day is the same. Guy is able to become self-aware that he should be able to make decisions in his own life and learn to take responsibility for his choices.

It is safe to say that this film is entertaining, comedic and charming. Jam-packed with action, “Free Guy” is definitely a movie you could watch 2 or 3 more times in order to catch details or cameos you may have missed the first time.
