The Cavalier Nation was out in full force on August 29, 2014 at Curtis Park for the season’s first game against the Southridge Spartans. With a victory of 19-7, it’s evident that the Cavaliers’ football season has begun!

“It’s great to get the first game under our belt, but our expectations are very high this year. If we want to win, we need to come together as a family,” Assistant Coach Miller said.

The first quarter was a defensive exchange: the teams battled, and neither scored. In the second quarter, the Cavaliers reached the end zone when quarterback Voshon “Bubba” Waders (#17) connected with wide receiver Andres Zaldivar (#19), allowing the Cavaliers to score first. The Cavaliers continued to advance – running back Amir Rasul (#34) scored on the ground, ending the half with a 13-0 lead.

“I did not like the outcome of the game. We left a lot of easy opportunities on the field, creating a big play. My favorite part of the game was the fourth quarter, because that’s when Gables stepped it up an extra notch and the intensity increased, and the whole point of the fourth quarter is to control the momentum,” junior Shakur Cooper said.

During the third quarter, Southridge scored their first touchdown of the game. The fourth quarter, beginning with a score of 13-7, brought all of the intensity left in the crowd out as defensive lineman Kenneth Herring (#4)  picked off a screen pass at the Spartan 10 yard line. Because of this momentum changer, the Cavaliers took over at the 5 yard line and Rasul found the end zone once again.

“I had the best time at the game with the Gablettes and the cheerleaders – the school spirit was all over the place! The football team did really well for the first game of the season,” freshman Jose Trejos said.

After their first victory, a lot is expected of the Cavaliers. Despite being exalted from celebratory cheers, though, they’re already preparing for their next big battle. Don’t miss the upcoming game on Sept. 5, 2014 – a home game against Krop Senior High!
