On Jan. 31, all eight of the seniors on the Lady Cavalier basketball team gathered on the court with their loved ones to celebrate their final game in the Cavalier gym.
On Jan. 31, the Lady Cavalier Basketball team honored their seniors by hosting Senior Night, a celebratory ending to their high school basketball careers during the last home game of the season. The bleachers were filled with supporters who came to cheer on the team’s seniors one last time before they graduate and chase their basketball dreams at the college level.
To make sure this night would be one to remember, the underclassmen planned a surprise party for the senior Lady Cavaliers, where the seniors were surprised with red and black 2020 balloons, red hearts and, of course, it would not have been a complete surprise without a red carpet for the seniors to walk on.
“It was a very emotional night for everybody since we had all been a part of the same team for four years. Every season, we would all look forward to playing together and then, out of nowhere, it was suddenly senior night and I realized it was going to be our last home game ever. With the help of our little sisters and the junior varsity team, the night was extra special with all of the posters, balloons and the beautiful runway they set up for us to walk and take pictures on,” senior Marie Viciedo said.
After everyone was introduced and had their picture taken, it was time to get serious. The Northwestern Bulls got off to a hot start and it seemed like the Lady Cavaliers had no hope of catching up. However, with the immense support from the crowd, they were able to energetically catch up to the Bulls.
Unfortunately, the Bulls rallied to regain their lead and won with a final score of 45-38. The top scorer for the Lady Cavaliers was sophomore Thais Forbes with a total of 16 points, followed by senior Graciela Morejon who managed to net 10 points.
The seniors dominated the boards that night, as senior Isabella Pinera brought down two offensive rebounds and six defensive rebounds. Although they lost the game, the Lady Cavaliers were still proud of the way they pushed through and never gave up.
After the game ended, it was time to party. The locker room was filled with balloons, streamers, cake, a select variety of cereals and snacks. The underclassmen also wanted to express their appreciation for the seniors and show them how much they will be missed.
Each senior had a locker that contained, a personalized poster, a rose, a mini basketball, candy, a picture of all the seniors together and personalized notes from all the underclassmen.
“We really love our seniors and next year will not be the same without them. They are all amazing mentors and have been a huge part of our team,” freshmen Leila Rodriguez said.
Despite a loss on the Cavalier floor, they still had a fantastic night. The Lady Cavaliers got to enjoy the roaring cheers of the fans as they walked on to the court, an amazing party and thoughtful personalized gifts they received from the underclassmen. Without a doubt, the Lady Cavalier Basketball team will never be the same without them.
