It’s finally the time of year when everyone is crazed to get their last minute Halloween costumes. Students and teachers all around the school are talking about what they will be wearing on that eerie day. Follow these steps to choose the perfect Halloween costume!
1. Where will you be going?
Will you be going trick-or-treating? Or to a party? This is important to think about because your costume has to be set to the occasion. A costume meant for a party isn’t necessarily meant to be worn if one will be walking out in the streets getting candy all night long. Make sure your costume is appropriate for the audience such as little kids. Senior Monica Moreno explains, “I have never actually celebrated Halloween because of my family’s religion, but it’s something I have always wanted to do. I also feel nowadays the costumes are sometimes very vulgar as if because it’s Halloween, it’s suddenly ok.”
2. What will the weather be like?
Before buying or making your Halloween costume, make sure you have prediction on what the weather may be like. For instance, freshman Emily Garcia says, “I will be Batman this year for Halloween, and if it happens to be chilly that night, I will be adding a Black leather jacket to my outfit so it can keep me warm.”
3. Choose a theme
Decide whether you may want your costume to be cute, scary, or over the top original. Minnie Mouse or cats are some of the cutest costumes that can be easily put together. On the other hand, if you are hoping to hear a scream, dressing up as a Walker (zombie) from the Walking Dead is the way to go. “This year I am planning to be a black cat, mostly because it would make a cute costume and because I’ve never been a cat before,” says freshman Brianna Valdes.
4. Face Makeup
Think about the face; your makeup is what completes your whole Halloween costume. Let’s say you will be a zombie, don’t be afraid to throw some fake blood on your face and make it all messy. Whether you will be putting on a unicorn mask or painting your whole face white, make sure you plan ahead and have all the materials ready for that day.
5. Show your creativity!
Don’t forget to incorporate your skills or talents into your costume! Let’s say you’re an amazing artist. Use that to your advantage, and use your skills to create an even more unique costume that will leave others speechless. Freshman Jasmin Valverde shares her costume ideas, “For Halloween, I’m planning to dress up as the queen of hearts, but I decided that in order to make my costume one-of-a-kind, I would use my creativity to make my own crown and wand by reusing my old jewelry.” Don’t hesitate to use old materials and transform it into something no one else has ever seen before.
6. Buy or DIY
Are you going to buy your costume or Do It Yourself (DIY)? Stores such as Party City, Spirit Halloween or La Casa De Los Trucos offer exquisite costumes. You can also choose to gather around clothing you already have at home and turn it into a costume. If none of these options are available for you, there are a couple of online Halloween stores that offer costumes at affordable prices.
